SUMMER CAMP ASSISTANT

Temporary Part-Time; July 8th-12th, 2019; 8 am–5 pm

$12.25/hour

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Bloomington Creative Glass Center promotes life-long learning through hands-on art classes and activities. The BCGC’s 2019 Summer Art Camp focuses on the art-making process to promote children’s curiosity, problem solving, independence and confidence and serves a variety of ages and skill levels. Camp Counselors assist the Camp Instructors in all aspects of operating the BCGC’s summer youth camp.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth, a general knowledge of various art techniques and materials, be dependable and have a positive and friendly attitude. All camp staff will promote and nurture the education of students by providing a safe, supportive, and positive environment conducive to learning. Counselors must be friendly and enthusiastic ambassadors of the BCGC’s.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Help Instructors with all camp activities and supervise during Creative Play, lunch, snack breaks, check-in, and check-out times.
2. Assist Camp Staff and Instructors during the duration of the camp program
• Welcoming and checking in campers
• Interacting with and helping campers with their projects
• Setting up and cleaning up materials
• Use time efficiently
3. Assist Camp Instructor in teaching students.
• Implement lessons as directed by the instructor including discussions, projects, exhibits, visual aids.
• Maintain a safe, secure and healthy educational environment by establishing classroom behavior expectations with consistent enforcement, communicating safety information and procedures to students, and following all BCGC policies and procedures.
• Maintain positive interactions with parents and guardians of students, including communicating with them about their child’s achievements or struggles
4. Manage materials in an effective and sustainable manner
• Clean equipment and studio space and store all materials at the end of each class session
• Collect and prepare artwork for exhibition as necessary
5. Be an Engaged Team member to promote personal growth and development of best practices.
• Attend meetings, trainings and key program events as determined by program staff
• Respond to emails and requests in a timely manner
• Maintain positive interactions in promotion and retention of BCGC programs and activities
• Actively engage in regular classroom observation.


PREFERRED COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):
• Possesses the proficiency (either through education and/or experience) to engage students of all abilities, assist in the teaching of concepts for the specific courses taught, and inspire students’ growth and creativity 
• Time management, organizational and planning skills
• Flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills as related to effective instruction

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
• Education, training or experience in art or art education
• Classroom/behavior management experience desired.

• Experience working with youth.

• CPR certification is encouraged.

• Art professional experience is desired but not necessary.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Occasionally required to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
• Perform physical tasks related to the medium in camp.

• Must be able to work both in and out of doors.
